Business Description
Cheniere Energy (LNG) is a Houston-based energy infrastructure company and the pioneer and undisputed heavyweight champion of the United States liquefied natural gas (LNG) export market.
When people think about moving physical goods around the world, the mental image is straightforward: shipping containers stacked on massive vessels or crude oil sloshing around inside supertankers. It is heavy, physical logistics, but the underlying concept is simple. Matter moves from point A to point B. The physical state of the product does not change during the journey. A car built in Japan remains a car when it rolls off the ship in Los Angeles. A barrel of crude oil remains a dark, viscous liquid when it leaves the Middle East and arrives at a refinery in Texas. The logistics may be complex, but the physics are mundane.
Natural gas exports are fundamentally different. To move natural gas across oceans, the industry must radically alter the physical state of the commodity itself. An invisible, combustible gas must be chilled to approximately -260°F (-162°C). At this temperature, natural gas condenses into a liquid and shrinks to roughly 1/600th of its original volume. The result is liquefied natural gas (LNG), the coldest industrial liquid produced at this scale.
This process represents one of the most extreme feats of industrial engineering in modern energy infrastructure. Gas molecules are frozen into a cryogenic liquid, stored in giant insulated tanks, transported across oceans in specialized vessels, and then reheated into gas at the destination so it can power homes, factories, and electrical grids.
This is where Cheniere comes in. At its core, Cheniere operates two massive, world-scale natural gas liquefaction and export facilities on the US Gulf Coast:
The Sabine Pass LNG terminal in Louisiana (the flagship facility). Alone is one of the largest LNG production facilities on the planet, boasting six operational trains with a total production capacity of >30 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).
The Corpus Christi LNG terminal in Texas, which currently has >21 MTPA of capacity with large expansions underway.
Combined, these facilities give Cheniere a staggering physical footprint. Across both of its sites, Cheniere’s total expected production capacity exceeds an enormous 60-63 MTPA (around half of the US’ total LNG export capacity), a figure that includes over 9 MTPA currently under construction as well as ongoing debottlenecking optimizations.
In LNG terminology, a train is a full liquefaction unit, a massive industrial system consisting of compressors, refrigeration cycles, pipelines, and heat exchangers. Each train spans several football fields and acts essentially as a gigantic refrigeration factory. Natural gas is processed through multiple refrigeration loops using refrigerants such as propane, ethylene, and methane. Massive turbines power compressors that progressively reduce the temperature until the gas condenses into LNG.
To truly understand the scale of this machine, you have to look at its operational track record. Since shipping its very first cargo in February 2016, Cheniere has successfully produced, loaded, and exported over 4,610 cumulative LNG cargoes. As the company celebrates a full decade of LNG exports, it has effectively delivered over 315 million tonnes of LNG to more than 40 different countries and regions globally.
Crucially, Cheniere is not just a passive processing plant, its primary business strategy is to act as a fully integrated, full-service LNG provider. The company controls the entire logistical chain required to fulfill the energy demands of its long-term customers: it procures the raw natural gas from US basins, secures the pipeline transportation capacity, super-cools the gas into a liquid (liquefaction), charters the vessels, and safely delivers the final product to integrated energy companies, trading houses, and utilities worldwide.
By mastering this complex supply chain, Cheniere has transformed itself into the critical physical bridge connecting cheap, abundant North American natural gas to a structurally energy-starved global market.
